Honeycomb Cells

The walls separate into a beautiful latticework hive, dotted with small honeycomb-like cells, each cell containing a miniature version of the flaming latticework hive. Each cell of the hive contains more hives.

The structure of this fretwork seems to match the pattern of her life, how she fits in with the larger picture, which fits in with the larger picture, which fits. . . .

Earth Cell

Within each cell is a world, a personality, a space. Meredith enters a cell.

She feels the earth beneath her feet; the stored energy of fossil fuels that lie buried within the earth waiting to be unlocked; the volcanic heat that is the core, that bubbles up in sulfurous mud holes and pours forth as lava.

She feels the bedrock that binds the earth together, the sands and soils that anchor the trees, the shrubs, the grasses, that furnish a base for crops to grow on, that nourish the plants that feed the animals that provide us with food.

She feels the earth that we all come from and to which we all return.

Water Cell

Meredith enters a cell.

She feels the water raining down, cooling the earth, irrigating the fields, slaking their thirst; the water coursing down into rivulets and streams that lead to the ocean, filling the ocean to its depths, gathering in great bottomless troughs, breaking in waves on the shores.

She feels the plants yearning for water, drawing it up in great gulps; the animals drinking the water, lapping it up.

She feels the thirsty people drinking, bathing, playing.

Fire Cell

Meredith enters a cell.

She feels the burning sun shining on the earth, growing forests and prairies, corn and potatoes.

She feels the temperature as it rises and falls, in winter and in summer, in spring and in the fall, in day and in night, but always the sun returns and tells the birds when to migrate and the bears to hibernate.

She feels the searing heat of lightning and forest fires.

Air Cell

Meredith enters a cell.

She feels the power of the wind, blowing across the earth, drying up the moisture, carrying it off in clouds; the weather changing from hot to cold, from dry to wet, from calm to raging storm.

She feels the naturally occurring greenhouse effect, trapping heat to warm the earth, but not too much.

She feels the ozone layer, a thin blue veil soaking up ultraviolet rays, protecting the earth from radiation.

Spirit Cell

Meredith enters a cell.

She feels the Great Spirit that lives in all things, in all who are here.

She feels the spirit that guides us and motivates us, that sends us out on new adventures and journeys.

She feels the spirit which reminds us that we are responsible for our actions.

She feels the spirit that will always be there no matter what we do.
