Avalanche

Suddenly, without warning the earth shook, dislodging rocks from the cave walls and deluging the travelers with an avalanche of falling stones and earth. Meredith and the shaman were separated in the flying dust. It was then that the little green hummingbird appeared, flying effortlessly through the rubble-filled air and hovering directly in front of Meredith to attract her attention. 

"Dear hummingbird, you are just in time. Help me to find the shaman," she said, resolving to trust in the tiny bird and follow wherever it might lead her. 

The hummingbird swiftly led her to the mouth of the sipapu, where she found the shaman waiting for her.

"Look, the sipapu continues above," he said, pointing up to a tube lodged in the ceiling.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hummingbird

"We must climb up at once and save ourselves," he cried, over the roars and moans of the earthquake-wracked cave. "The world of the Ant People is coming to an end. Destruction is upon them." The rocks were shifting and falling all around them and there was no time to lose. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

Scrambling

The hummingbird, beckoning them, darted up into the sipapu and disappeared from their sight. Meredith screwed up her courage and leapt into the small open, quickly followed by the shaman.
